Downloading HD video clips from Canon SX20 is bridge camera

I have recently used my Canon SX20 is bridge camera to take HD video clips.
Although I have downloaded Quick Time, my video clips will not play, and appear on my laptop as a still photograph. I have copied my clips onto Windows Movie Maker, but again they only play back as a slide.
Can anyone cast any light on why this is happening. I never had this problem with video clips on my previous camera (which was not HD )

Windows Movie Maker doesn't support the MOV file format, so I'm unsurprised that you can't load your files into that program.

Windows Media Player can't play recent MOV files (although the earlier standard is supported) .

However I can't see why they won't play in the dedicated Quicktime Player. (Are you sure that you're actually trying to play them with Quicktime, and not with Windows Media Player?)

Try playing the files with a DECENT media player, such as VLC or GOM:

I have a Canon S3 IS and a Canon SX20 IS. The videos from the S3 play on my desktop without any problems using Windows Media Player. The HD videos from my SX20 DO NOT PLAY even though I have Apple's QuickTime installed since I go to websites that use QuickTime to watch their videos. The vides from my SX20 at 640x480 and lower play on my desktop using QuickTime with not problems. It's the HD videos that do not play resulting in videi footage that is way much larger and wider than my 20" LCD monitor and the video shows only the opening scene which is frozen and the cursor becomes an hourglass that never changes. The still image of the video shows only the left half of the frame and the usual Minimize, Maximize, and red Close X are hidden on the right side of the monitor.

Not realizing that Canon had replaced WMV (the S3 IS) with QuickTime (SX20 IS) without it being mentioned in the User's Guide I sent my camera in to Canon to "repair" it. They returned it and I still can't play HD videos even though I've removed and reinstalled QuickTime a few times.

Some of us SX20 IS owners are screwed as far as being able to play HD videos. But thanks to VLC, GOM, and RealPlayer we can. What the problem is and where is it (camera, PC) is a good guess and I don't have the answer and it seems Canon doesn't either.
