That takes you up to 1960. May I suggest you get Halliwells Film, Video & DVD guide. It's a guide that seems particularly keen on older films, but seems a little harsh on modern productions. Sorry, if the list has bored you stupid.
"Fanny by gaslight"
"Harvey", lovely film, makes me cry everytime,
"Whistle down the wind"
"Boys Town"
"Angels with Dirty Faces"

A Matter of Life and Death ( David Niven)

The Bishop's Wife (David Niven)

Goodbye Mr Chips (Robert Donart)

For a good laugh--"Mr.Blandings Builds His dream Home" and if you're in the mood for feelgood, and a great story--"Random Harvest"!
Ice Cold In Alex is an all time classic and well worth a watch, if only for the final scene with the Carlsberg!

My two favourite films (black and white) of all time are

NOW VOYAGER (Bette Davis) and RANDOM HARVEST (Greer Garson)

Have the tissues ready.

Penny Serenade with Cary Grant (he was nominated for an Oscar for this film)
Kind Hearts and Coronets
The Wizard of Oz
Hobsons Choice (with John Mills)
The St Trinians films
and then there's the 'kitchen sink' dramas of the early 60's - Room at the Top, Saturday Night Sunday Morning, In the Family Way etc
Forgot to add 'A Canterbury Tale'. Nothing to do with Chaucer!

I have to stamp my seal of approval on two films already mentioned: The Philadelphia story and Mr. Blandings builds his dream home.

For British film's what about: Spring and Port wine, Billy liar and A Taste of Honey.
