Jean Lucille Saffin or 'Jeannie', was sitting with her 82 year old father in N. London in 1982, when she suddenly burst into flames. I can't believe it myself and the article in www.madsci.org is also sceptical, but it's an interesting read.

Not really what is being asked, but a mystery anyway. In August 1997, a girl was working on the checkout at the Co-op supermarket in Wigan when she felt a pain and thought she had been stung by a bee. She rushed to the toilet and found that her knickers were on fire. The knickers were made of polyamide, polyester and lycra. They were examined by the manufacturer but no fault was found. A smouldering cigarette was discounted because she was at work.
Good laugh Grunty but the truth is that human beings do not undergo spontaneous combustion. However, white phosphorus can.
