Help please with 17a and 15d : I abandon lame parent ??m and Gilbert and Sullivan overtures thrill American g?s

So if 17a is mam (as in maim losing the I) 15d must be Gas but can't see why?

yeh shoota, I thought maybe that as well - obscure, very obscure! Thanks so much.

Tks Captain - it's the word American in the clue that threw me - in the 60's UK teenagers used the word 'gas' for 'thrill' just as much as in the US and I wasn't aware it originated as such in the States.
