Is it getting too hot?

Make sure the vents around the side and underneath are not bunged up with dust or fluff.

Maybe get a hair drier and "blow out" any dust and fluff from any air vents.

Dont use it on top of anything that retricts air flow (like bed clothes, cushion etc), make sure the air can circulate underneath.
I feel sure that VHG is on the right track and has given you good advice; especially about avoiding using a laptop on soft surfaces.... which would include one's lap.

My only doubt is cleaning vents with a hair drier which I feel could blow dust into the computer......Perhaps what I have is required.( A mini Vac.) :-
