I recently signed up to Twitter out of curiousity, and I think I 'get it' now (for ages, I literally couldn't see the point).
Think of it as little communities of people exist on a different plane.
Good example - in real life, you have people who exist on different planes:
Level 1: would get invited to your wedding
Level 2: would get invited to your wedding reception
Level 3: would go for a drink after work with you
Level 4: would get a Christmas card from you
Level 5: would smile and nod 'hello' to you in the lift, but wouldn't know your name.
Online tweeting communities are another plane...but a virtual one. I find myself followng people rather than tweeting myself - lots of tech bloggers for example.
I also follow Stephen Fry, but only because he's clever and I repeat things he's said, passing them off as my own witticisms.
