I can't speak from any personal experience, but hopefully the link to this government site will give you accurate information about getting one.
Oh - only thing I will say, is that Stagecoach buses always seem to be advertising for new drivers saying "Full training given" - perhaps this includes the extra driving training needed for a PSV. Just a thought! :-)
Good luck to your husband! :-)
as a current licence holder (not psv anymore - pcv passenger carrying vehicle) i can inform you of some details as i work for arriva.
with any major bus company as long as you pass the usual minor tests (driving standards (minibus), maths & english) they will normally pay for your training as long as you stay with the company for a period of time, otherwise they will usually ask for some fees to be paid. training usually consists of classroom work (approx. 1 week), and driving (1 week, with test at end). the test will be a minimum of 1 hour long (unlike car test, 1 hour max) and will contain about 1 solid hour of driving, then verbal questions & answers after. also included now is the theory test as well which must be passed before sitting practical. if going to do test privately, the cost will run well into the high hundreds but will normally secure a manual licence, whereas with companies they usually secure automatic/semi-automatic licences. be aware that unsociable hours are required to be worked, weekends, earlies, lates (i can start as early as 04.30hrs and finish as late as 00.50hrs (weekend night buses finish around 04.00hrs - 05.30hrs these operate only in & around major cities).
this can be a very stressful job, and you do meet every kind of person on the road and on your vehicle, polite to raving lunatic! not trying to put you off, but it does have its rewards as well. hope this has helped somewhat.
