You couldn't make it up. Every year one area or another in this country suffers a flood ( I remember seeing warnings of localised flooding for my area only a few weeks back), which we never seem to tackle the cause of, even though it's a regular occurence in some unlucky spots, despite a news article yesterday that outlined new flood defence work.

We need a deluge before April apparently. Don't hold your breath!

I think the shortage is more a case of demand than supply.

..and the demand in the South East is set to soar over the summer, with all the Olympian vistors. Ardingly reservoir is already low :-(

the south east could purchase water from scotland. we have loads !

anne: no problem with the purchase. You'd have to deliver it though. That's where the problem lies - the distribution.

I remember during the last war many towns had large plastic/rubber prefab tanks full of water on street corners to be used for fire fighting. Is it not possible that these could be erected in convenient places throughout the country to collect rainwater to be used in times of drought ?.

It would of helped if they hadn't sold so many reservoirs to housing companies, but then if there isn't a shortage how can they insist on water meters?

There should not be a drought, it is simply a lack of investment, the result of a utility company being privately owned.

SE England actually has relatively low rainfall compared with many places and that's where most of our population lives.

But other parts of the uk have surplus rain.

I thought someone worked up a plan in which the existing inland waterways/canals could be used to move water south.
