If the manual says they are available as an option they I'd say if you (or the original owner) didn't pay for them, you ain't got them.
Your Micra has folding seats because it's a hatchback. No saloon that I have owned (Merc, BMW, Audi) has had folding seats, but my mate's Subaru does.

HI Gingebee, yes I agree, I looked everywhere I could think of those catches but no avail. I never had a modern without foldable rear seats and it is something I find incredible. Saving costs I suppose but it is annoying for me because even though I don't have a javelin, or fishing gear, I do have a bike. I think I am going to check how much the option is on the new cars but I will be observant about it next time.
Hey oneinam, I've heard stories about car thieves doing that trick at gyms before. I've come to the conclusion that anyone who steals is the lowest of the low and also that gyms are over rated crime hotspots. Oh, and LA Fitness are a terrible outfit! But, back on point...,
Generally, like gingejbee said, hatchbacks will usually come with folding seats and saloons won't. Mondeos, to use your example, could be either. If the boot glass opens, it's a hatchback, if not its a saloon. So a hatchback could be described as having 5 doors or 3 doors. A saloon will have 4 doors and may be called a sedan. The Mondeo comes as both a hatchback and a saloon.
I've had two 3-series saloons, neither had folding seats (though one had a ski hole where the rear arm rest was!), nor did my Audi 80 (predecessor to the A4).
I have no idea how much Merc add on for the option, but if you are really keen on the extra space, and you want to put your bike in the back, why not go for the estate version? The c-class estate is lovely!

Hi Goonermatt
I had a look in the options list of the current Merc C Class and you are not going to believe this. Its only a £250 option. That is an option I definitely would have.
The ski holes are a great idea. I have had a few estates when I was doing a lot of driving but I don't carry enough long/big items to warrant one now. the lack of space for a bike is a real bummer.
Yes, gyms are easy targets and its not like the gym could install cameras in the changing rooms but I have seen in David Lloyds and Fitness First (overseas) smaller lockers (for expensive/important items) situated outside the changing rooms and in better view of the staff. I think this a great idea.
I sold the Micra just before, that is a fabulous car, it even had a handbag hook (not for me though) however the C Class does have 2 convenience hooks in the boot. How thoughtful, pity about the seats.
