In my last Word application(2003) documents used to be saved as .doc, but now my new Word 2010 seems to save by default as .docx and when i send it as an attachment some people are unable to open it. Is this the normal way Word 2010 saves, if not how can i set .doc as my default save. thanks

I get this a lot because we are still in 2003 at work.

Your new system (like mine) will automatically save as docx unless you tell it otherwise. All you have to do when you are saving a document is to click the drop-down menu in "save as" and choose the 97-2003 option. That works.
In the File tab, select Options and 4th down the list is Save. The very top option in that is for selecting the default save file format.

Thanks guys will follow your advice
A better option would be send the person the link below and get them to install the office compatibility pack and then they will be able to open docx files.

It's a better option because it may not be only you that will send them files in the newer format and installing the pack will save them having to ask everyone to resave and resend the document in the old format in the future.
Following on to Chucks answer...installing the Office compatibility pack is also a better option because Excel file formats have also changed, as have other Office files, so once the compatibility pack is installed ALL Office files in thew new format can be opened.
