Free anti virus protection.

What is the best free anti virus protection?

At the moment I have AVG but I am having a V Protect Application that keeps popping up when I start my computer.

My operating system is XP and my browser if FireFox 9.0.1

I don't want to leave my system unprotected by deleting AVG before loading it again.

'Microsoft security essentials' was recommended to me.

I have MSE security essentials , free and never had a problemin 2 years.
If you have a Barclays bank account and it is registered for online use, they offer free Kaperski security to all online banking customers. If you don't have a Barclays account just open a 'cash card' account with £1 and register it as online, you can get the free kasperski and need never touch the account unless you want to.

Thanks for your answers, would it be safe to download it first, before deleting AVG?

Because I was once told it is not a wise thing to have more than one anti virus programme.

Is there a Microsoft one already on computers, because I think I can remember deactivating it before I loaded AVG?

You need to uninstall the current anti virus first or the 2 will 'fight' each other.
as soon as it is installed it will run a scan and find anything that has got in.

Sorry to but in....but I've got an idea (and I work in IT, so nerr).

1. Download the new new version of AVG.
2. Disconnect your PC from your wireless hub, or unplug your broadband connection (or even quicker - just unplug your hub).
3. Install the new version of AVG
4. Reconnect to the Net.

Whilst you're performing the installation, you can be sure that your PC is protected, because you're not connected.

Also, you're wise to chose Girefox as your web browser - it has far fewer malware/viruses/spyware written for it, because of its relative (to Internet Explorer) unpopularity.
