It's wonderful in a kind of 'I'm off to scrub the inside of my skull out with soap' kinda way!
alba, did you know Dolly Parton wrote that song ?
yep Vulcan. I think that's why I found it so moving when she sang it. It was so gentle and sung with feeling.
Dolly wrote the song about country star Porter Wagoner. She was hired as his duet partner for his TV show, and when she left, she wrote the song about him. Waggoner sued her, and it cost DP over six hundred thousand dollars to extract herself from her contract, so obviously her feelings were not returned!
For better or worse, Ms. Houston's style and technique still, in my opinion, displayed her early training in the Black Gospel Music genre'. Especially the Black Gospel renditions from the deep south of the U.S. Lot's of emotion, lots of strong voice. Although she was a soloist at age 11 or 12 or so at New Hope Baptist Church in Newark, New Jersey (hardly close to the Mason-Dixon Line) the Black Spiritual/Gospel influence was still predominant. In my opinion that experience influenced her throughout her later life.

Traditional Black Gospel music usually has at least one chorus or actual stanza done 'a cappella' which required a strong voice projection.

i hear there the best times of all
Trish liked her, I on the other hand always thought of her as "Wailing Whitney" and if Trish wasn't in as soon as she came on the radio I switched it off.
I agree, I could not stand her voice either!
I went off her after being subjected to The Bodyguard film shown repeatedly on a coach from Dunstable to Southern France (about a 24 hour journey with on a double decker coach packed with excited teenagers going on a school trip (I was one of the teachers) I honestly thought I was going to loose the will to live).
Just because some of us do not like her does not mean she could not sing. She could sing but I was not a big fan of hers. It takes all sorts to make a world and we are all the richer for it.
My late mum hit the nail on the head when she heard Whitney sing and asked
"Who is that screechy woman?"
I have to disagree with JTH for once - the most annoying, shouty voice ever to assail us has to belong to Pete Tyler.
And to answer deggers, no.
