It depends on why your rating is not a sgood as you'd like. Is it because you have a not so good credit history or simply because you have no credit history?
Stay in one address.... have a regular salaried job, regularly take out loans and pay back on time never missing a payment have a credit card and pay it on time the more you have the more you can get.

I've paid off a car loan and pay the balance of one credit card.
When I applied for a mortgage it was declined as my credit rating was not good/high enough.
Have you looked at your own credit rating/profile on a site like Equifax or Experian?

There may be a late payment or something that wasn't your fault
For every customer there will be a maximum amount of credit that a company will set. They will add together all the credit limits (even if you aren't using them) on the basis that you could decide to 'max out' (I think that's the expression), and then decide whether they would be prepared to add to that credit limit.

Steps you can take then include:
(1) If you have any old credit cards you no longer need then close the account.
(2)Also if the credi card limits are more than you need then ask them to reduce them.
(3) plus all the thinngs others have suggested
There are many reasons why a mortgage lender might decline an application. When they say your credit rating isn't good enough they may mean that you simply don't meet their picture of their ideal client. Have you only approached one mortgage lender?
