Heard something on the radio earlier today about Royal Mail wanting to put up the cost of 2nd class post by over 50%.
That will certainly reduce the number of crosswords I enter unless I can do them on-line.
Will such an increase affect many puzzlers on here?
Daisya:
Royal Mail made a loss because the number of letters sent nowadays is a tiny fraction of what it used to be (with email and other forms of electronic media largely replacing traditional letters). However Royal Mail is still legally obliged to provide daily collections and deliveries across the whole of the UK, at standardised prices.
Well one reason is the decline in personal mail sent, and another is the loss of revenue from private companies who undercut Royal Mail to businesses, but who under regulations can use RM to deliver.
People moan about the price of stamps but that one price guarantees delivery wherever you are posting to. The private companies would not be prepared to do that.
Some of the larger Post Offices here have self-adhesive stamps in sheets of 100. I used to buy them for the convenience, now I just get the books of 12 locally as I need them.
I complete many crosswords in a week, some of them prize crosswords. Never enter them. Save my stamps to send birthday cards. The cards are not cheap either. Somehow e cards are not the same.
