What is the difference, in civil law, between marriage and civil partnership.

I think that marriage is only possible between male and female whereas a civil partnership is for same sex couples.
But I might be wrong.

Thank you Heathfield. Very informative! I'm wondering now if the non biological parent of any children can adopt them thus giving them a two parent family arrangement, with rights regarding medical matters etc., and of course responsibilities re maintenance etc.

Registry office weddings are a civil cerimony. There can be no real marriage between same sex couples.they should be satisfied with a civil arrangement.
