I have just received an email purportedly from Fedex telling me a package couldn't be delivered. An invoice was attached which looked innocuous, as it was a Word document.

I "Snoped" it and found out it contained a virus.

If you receive one, delete it straightaway.

No attachment to any unsolicited email should ever be thought of as innocuous.
Thanks for that, chrissa, but surely "you"'d be expecting a parcel, i.e "you"'ve purchased a service/item, ergo this alwys screams scam to me, if I hadn't purchased anything lately.
I wouldn't have even opened it.
I've had cards through the door using that scam
I buy a lot from eBay where sellers use lots of different carriers, so it is possible if you do that you could be fooled into calling - and someone not au fait with this type of thing would almost likely to be fooled because they look so real
There are 1000's sent each day so even just a small % believing it could make these scammers a lot of money
Chrissa1 you said you snoped it, what do you mean, is there a way to tell it has a virus?
Ummmm if you don't open it how will you know whether it's genuine or important or not, surely the expensive antivirus's people have should be a safenet and would catch any nasties?

Snopes.com is a site that checks out urban myths etc that "do the rounds". They tell you if they are fase or true.

I know who I have given my email address to.

True ummmm, but if you've bought something online it's possible that the seller might have used Fedex.
Oh i see i forgot about that site chrissa1, this scam probably works on the probability that people have used fedex/ups and then gets them infected by spyware when they open the attachment, fedex/ups are big in the states so guess this scam must've originally been aimed at them.
I'm getting 3 or 4 a week from Fedex/Ups, I just delete them unopened, I know if I'm due a delivery or not.

This is the first one I've had about Fedex Baldric. Just thought I'd pass on the warning.
I had an email from 'Royal Mail' stating that a parcel could not be delivered owing to being 'incorrectly addressed' and asking that the attachment, entitled 'Copy Invoice' be opened. I deleted it......
Nothing had been ordered.
How did they know the address was incorrect? It didn't make sense! They normally stick a card through the door.
Why would the 'Royal Mail' have my email address?
Sorry chrissa, didn't mean to sound dismissive, warnings are always appreciated, so thank you
