At risk of sounding trite, moving the 6 o'clock news to a later slot would probably just confuse people! :-p
I presume the scheduling is carefully chosen to time it right for business people with hectic schedules who want to listen to the news on the way home from work. Between 5 and 6 they do not want to drive home to find they're listening to the second half of a play, or, if they swapped it over, today's dementia programme.
If you look at the schedule, within the bounds of "intelligent speech" it appears to be excellent programming. I think it's well pitched at its audience, hence the good listener numbers.
I would say to leave it as it is. I tihnk the time for the fresh new programming on Radio 4 is in the day time. On the way home, that's when people want what they expect from BBC Radio -
- Cheese
- Easy listening
- Jazz/Classical mix
- Intelligent speech
- Debate, news and sport
I think the programming from 5-7 reflects that at the moment.
Good luck with your project.
