Name that bug, anyone?

This is not a quiz question, it's a genuine query. In autumn I emptied the soil from my patio tubs into a big pot and left it over winter. I have now come to use some of the compost again and have found some small white creatures in residence. They are about 8-10mm long, have 6 (I think) legs, are round at the head and pointed at the bottom. They are curled round in an embryonic position and don't move much, only an occasional wriggle. I assume they are the larvae of some insect, but which one? Any ideas out there?

They are more than likely vine weevil grubs. If you google for vine weevil grubs you'll find lots about them. Then select 'images' and there's some good pictures to help you identify.

They sound like vine weevil grubs. Take them from the compost and destroy them, because they will eat the roots and kill any plant you put in the compost.

Yup, that's the kiddy! Found some pics of the vine weevil life cycle and it's the pupa. Into the bin with the compost then.........
