My electric shower is completely broken and I need to replace it. A stupid question, but do I need a plumber or an electrician to install a new one?

A CORGI registered plumber should be fully competent to do all the work

Whilst the above is true CORGI is a gas certification.

Under the new part P building regs qualified trades such as plumbers are allowed to do electrical work in areas like kitchens and bathrooms providing it's part of the job they're doing and not a job in iteself. So a plumber should be able to install your power shower but not put a socket into your kitchen.

Well the opposite is also true, in that electricians do the plumbing part of installing a shower, Probably just use whichever is easier to find, (and who gives the lower price)
my father is a corgi registered heating engineer and he informs me that he is no longer allowed to wire up central heating systems etc even though he has done it for 35 years. if he wants to do his own wiring he has to go and do a further training course and obtain the relevant certificate, all at great expense to himself.

Gucciman - your father can register with a self certification scheme

See sections 6,7 & 8 here:

Section 9 says:

Q9: What are defined competence self-certification schemes?

These are schemes aimed at contractors who do electrical work as an adjunct to their main activity - for example kitchen and bathroom fitters and central heating installers.
