Ann- if you have a magnifying glass check it for hallmarks- one you've established the grade of gold it is ( usually 9, 10, 14, 18 or 22k) weigh it on your kitchen scales. Weigh each type seperately. so for instance you might end up with 10 grams of 9k gold and 5 grams of 18k etc or whatever. the go to this site and type in your quantities. It will give you a price. that is...

cool! does anyone know of the best place to flog it? is it over the net or somewhere like cash generator or the like....
Depends on it's grade as DT said, if it's 925 sterling which is the commonest or if it's continental or Indian which is a lower grade usually. This site will give you the ' live' price- expect to get around 10'20% below that from most dealers.

sorry nibble you weren't there when I started posting:)
Question Author
most of it is 925....and does it matter if it is broken? can they test broken bits? x
You can acid test silver, so doesn't really matter.

oh, ok. thanks nox x
925 sterling isn`t pure silver. It is a copper mix. I would check very carefully as to where you sell it. There are a lot of web based and postal sites that have sprung up to take advantage of the increase in metal prices. It will make no difference if the jewellery is broken. The interest is in the metal. I recently sold some silver I bought in Singapore (it had no markings at all) and I got quite a good price for it.

thanks to all. will go touting in the morning! x
Icg - how do you go about touting? Do you just walk into a jewellers and ask for a price and then just leave after their quote? I have some gold and silver I want to sell but I don't know where to go, I'm scared as some places must surely try and rip you off.

It will give you a price. that is about 4% below the live price at the time you enter it. the live price changes everyday- so make sure you do it the day you are ready to go. A dealer will not offer you that price usually. Usually they will offer you about 20% less than that because they have to make a profit, but this site will give you a guide. then just go into places that advertise they buy gold and ask how much they will give you, armed with teir info. most places will knock money off ( rather than on for stones even if they are diamonds etc so be aware of that). Don't be afraid to haggle with them, they often don't offer their best price first- and ask for it per gram so you know where you are. Good luck:)

i would like to say thanks to all for your advice....i managed to shop around and got nearly £60 for all my unwanted/broken jewellery. i'm a very happy bunny and you helped me along the way. cheers x
Sorry to interrupt. Ann - am I right in thinking you live in London? Try Austin Kaye on The Strand. They`re very good to deal with, will give you a price and cash there and then. They are predominately a watch dealer now but still do their gold and silver buying.
