dog keeps 'groaning'

Hi we have a ciarnterrier type male dog 14yrs old and lately he lets out a sort of groaning/howling noise,any ideas please.

It could well be arthritic pain, which he only really notices when lying down (or when in a particular position) - a bit like my dodgy hip!

You need to get him checked out by the vet, as it seems that he's probably experiencing some pain. (Simple painkillers, or anti-inflammatory tablets, might be enough to solve the problem).

maybe the poor old chap has got a bit of arthritis, my 15yr old lab does the same thing (so do i), i give her 1/2 an ibroprufen or parracetamol (100gm) three times a day and it seems to help, but a smaller dog can't have so much, a vet would advise.

Also, Ibuprofen is highly toxic to dogs and cats. It can cause bleeding ulcers, liver damage, and may even be fatal. Please do not give either of these drugs to your dog.

Cecil my advice would be to get some animal friendly painkillers for your animals from your vet as you could be doing them so much harm. I say this as an animal lover and not to criticize you.

i have spent the afternoon looking at websites re human drugs for dogs, all i can say is i was advised by an old vet years ago to treat old dogs this way and have always done so, and my dogs have always been okay on it, and all of them have lived into their mid to late teens, the old lab i have now on this treatment, eats well,looks well, still likes her little walk and i expect her to reach her 16th birthday in june. but please take your vets advise, not mine, i expect modern vets know a lot more than my old chap does.
