dvd's

most dvd's now have extras on them -now with 5 hours of extras including interviews with the director etc,etc,etc does anyone actually watch these?

I've often wondered that... once in a while I do, if it's a film I really liked or found interesting. But mostly, no. I'm not interested in director voice-overs telling me what he was trying to do - if I can't see what he was trying to do I'll have thrown the DVD away anyway. And watching cast interviews with everyone saying how they had to dig deep into their subconscious or what a fabulous time they all had... like being trapped in an advertising agency.

As a rule I avoid the interviews, but I like watching the commentaries and deleted scenes etc. If its done well then a commentary can really enhance the viewing pleasure, especially if it's by the actors who tend to be a little more charismatic than the cinematographers and producers.

I want to know how long it's going to be before CD's start containing commentaries by the band. "We tried 80 different drum effects before importing this one from Japan" etc etc.

I've noticed that the film companies are releasing more and more films with or without extras at the same time. So now you have the choice.

I do watch all the extras, though a lot of info gets repeated, and most interviews/commentaries do consist of those involved gushing praise on each other.

When the released the James Bond films on DVD each one had a specific Documentary about the film and one about Bond guns, or women, cars, etc.. They were very good, if you like Bond that is.

I think with new films (released in the last 5-10 years) there is so much media attention on them anyway that the extras are just rehashed press releases trailers etc. You do get the odd one with decent deleted scenes and alternative endings but most of the time they are rubbish

But some of the extras on older films are great, a couple that stand out are the commentory on Withnail and I which has some great insights and the commentory on the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
