listen to zorba the greek
Here in the U.S., the mandolin is the third predominant instrument in southern Blue Grass music... right after the banjo and guitar. (Or alternately, a very useful instrument in the kitchen for thin slicing cucumbers...)
I thought Zorba was a bouzouki.
Have a listen to this to hear a mandolin.

The solo in Maggie May by Rod Stewart is a mandolin. Zorba the Greek is a bazouki(sp).
Daughter in law gave my son a mandolin for his Christmas. Like your son SK he also has quite a collection of guitars as he plays in a group. Loves the mandolin.
This is one of my all-time favourite Rod Stewart songs..
