I have found a coin can you help identify it
Could you please help identify a coin I have found .
the Date. 1798. T.5. (value) There is a Crown, either side of the crown are letters R O
The other side is a Shield, around the Shield is a Garland .
I have not cleaned the coin, it has not been outside,how should I clean it please .

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.Don't clean it, as said. the reason is that any old coin is valued for its patina, the gradual darkening of the metal, that occurs with time. Clean that off and you ruin both its appearance and its value to any collector (or museum).

I used to collect coins when young dont know much about it now but I can tell you whatever you do dont clean it yourself I seem to remember this is a sin to the initiated.
I have a 1797 cartwheel penny what you are describing isnt that so you can rule that one out. Search google images; 1798 coin there are a few there might fit...
