CLOSE ENCOUNTER WITH MARS: Today, Mars is at its closest to Earth for 2012. The Red Planet is only 101 million km away and shines about six times brighter than a 1st magnitude star. Look for it in the eastern sky at sunset. The burnt-orange color of Mars is very distinctive, especially when seen from rural areas with clear skies.

You've got me hooked wendilla - but my birdwatching bins aren't up to the job really.

Can you give me some tips on a sensible astronomical telescope that won't need a second mortgage ?

Sorry Dave I don't know anything about telescopes. I don't know much about the stars just started to try and learn about them . I just have have a good set of Binoculars but I am sure someone will be able to advise you.

Also I don't normally post about the planets I just do the Spaceststion sightings post but it has been such a super line up that we very rarely see of the planets.

Its a lovely clear sky tonight in Yorkshire. I can see the planets, Jupiter I think is the largest and very bright Mars, does look a bit red, no binos but they are clearly not stars. Thanks for the reminder wendilla.
