Planting Raspberry Canes
1 Answers
Can anyone tell me the best time to plant new raspberry canes. Mine didn't do well this year but they had long off-shoots which I didn't cut off and I think thats why, so I am putting some new canes in.

If the soil freezes then you'd be better off waiting until spring. Don't plant them to deeply, no more than 3 inches or so. Additionally, when they begin growing in the spring, prune back the cane you planted to about 10 inches above ground level. Then, when the sucker canes begin growing from that one, cut it (not the suckers) back severely. Do not take any fruit from the new plant(s) the first season. Be sure to thoroughly work the bed and use compost and/or manure in the bed before you plant. Good luck!
