Has President Sarkozy got the right idea?

Well reading through President Sarkozy's ideas on France's immigration problems, would a British politician get support from those in this country that think we also have an immigration problem?
Or more to the point, would a British politician dare to say the same?
Forget the deliberate side step comments his wife has made, also equally forget his implied attacks on Muslims and Jews, these were only calls for better labelling of kosher and halal products and not a specific attack on Jews and Muslims.

Restrict oppressive religious practices eg veils, forced marriage etc
Of course we should also adopt France's sensible and related concept of Laicité formalized in the 1905 law which guarantees separation of church and state, that is, the separation of religion from political power.
So kick the Bishops out of The House of Lords and definitely no prayers in Council Chambers.

Sarkozy is up for re-election in the summer and he is currently way behind in the polls.
I think that should tell you what you need to know on this.
But the Kosher/Halal labelling issue is interesting
This was an EU initiative
Most halal meat is stunned - Kosher is not
The initiative was killed off by the Jewish lobby rather than the muslim one

Yet another trip back into history, to scrub over the difficulties of today, especially when some tell me to stop harking back to the glory days of the 50s, when they themselves are prepared to go back even further to get their point over.
Please practice what you preach, even if you are not religious.
Also perhaps you haven't noticed that this thread is about immigration not religion.

Precisely, he has hit on a popular approach to France's immigration problem, and in doing so he is hoping it will attract the same popular support from the masses, so much that they will vote him back in power.
I only hope he isn't like our own politicians, who make pre-election promises and then conveniently fail to carry them out.

I quoted CURRENT French law so it is contemporary not from 'the annuls'
The french attitude to immigration and integration is directly related to their concept of the French state and french culture. One of the core beliefs in that is that it is a secular state ie separated from religion
Hence the laws regarding wearing of the veil etc
A good idea IMO.
So .....
back to kicking the irrelevant and deluded parasites, the clergy out of our parliament

If they upset you so much, I suggest you enter a thread on that particular subject yourself, perhaps in the section 'Society & Culture', sub-section, 'Religion'.
This then, will not clog up the 'News' section or divert ABers attention from the subject in question.
That being immigration, in case you are confused.

It's a far deeper question in France than here because of its old African colonies , from Tunisia and Algeria southwards, "le hommes du Sud."
Muslims in France make up nigh on 8% of the population now, (never mind the ghetto percentages), whereas in the UK it is less than 4.5%
Conclusion - not such as issue for our Government and I don't think DC will be losing that much sleep over this. Daily Wailing, so typical........
Interestingly other countries: Germany 5%, Netherlands 5.5%, Belgium %, Italy 2.6%, Spain 2.3 % (USA ,1%)

///we must divide by two the number of people that we welcome, that is to say to pass from 180,000 per year to 100,000.///
They get their priorities right, no talk about net migration as they do here which increases our numbers 4 fold compared with his intention. Some of our emigrants are highly skilled and how you can compare that with an Aghan from the slums beats me.

I think the mans bang on, as with this country isnt this a Christian country? I hate the fact we have people claiming benefits that are foreign whether they are muslim or Jewish, or in fact any other religion in this country, but this is a Christian country though has been for around 1300 years don't think it should change myself and I'm not old and moaning I'm 19 and surrounded by mosques that preach insanity about bombs, no offence to other muslims.in what my forefathers fought for as in the holy land..
