My laptop did something weird in the night. I've shut down and restarted but still on google home page there are no longer new tabs available, my favourites are not displayed or anything else and the icons at bottom right where I could change %age size. What's happened, I'm on IE8?

I think you have to press F11
It's still IE8 is it. MS didn't upgrade it while you slept and rebooted did they ? (Only wondering - don't have any knoledge that they are doing so.)

Aside from that could be anything really. Corrupt files, malware. Might be worth performing a virus scan and a malware scan, see if all seems ok.
Sounds like its automatically upgraded to IE9. Go to righthand corner of screen right click mouse and a dropdown menu will appear - click the box favourites bar and your favourite links will appear where they were with IE8. click command bar and your home, feeds print commands will appear in the bar. Your drop down favourites is now on the RHS -a little star. HTH

Thanks edxc but that is just making it full screen (ie AB fills the whole screen)
as exdc it's probably in fullscreen mode so use F11

BHell Kristal, you're right it says IE9. What a cheek. Now I'm in a right mess, I've lost the google home button, everything. So don't you have tabs in IE9, surely I don't have to keep opening IE to get another page running concurrently.
If only it were as simple as F11 :-)
You do have tabs in IE9, they are just to the right of the address bar as default. (you can right click in that area and select "show tabs on a separate row if you want)

The home button is on the far right of the tool bar now.

Also if you used your favourites bar press ALT then select view > toolbars > favourites bar to get it back.
When you right click the top of the page and manage to get the drop down menu click the box SHOW TABS ON SEPARATE ROW -this will bring the tabs to the top of your page. http://support.microsoft.com/ph/807
Don't you have a star at the top right hand side? If you click on that you can select to display favourites, I recall.
You can also make new tabs open with your home page by default by pressing alt and selecting tools > internet options, then on the general tab click the settings button in the tabs section and selecting your home page under the "when a new tab is opened" drop down.

OK this is when it's easier to be able to speak face to face! Right I've got tabs now chuck so thanks. I can get favourites to appear on the taskbar with the Alt route but as soon as I click away it goes again - is that right?

Now don't tut, on top of everything else I dropped my laptop, broke the little chip thing for the remote mouse which broke and now using the touchpad which I detest. How do I right click - the design is one large pad and 2 underneath, the right pad doesn't seem to do anything.
if you want the menu bar there full time press alt so it displays and then select view > toolbars > menu bar and it will stay

You right click by pressing the right of the two buttons under the touchpad BTW.
