How about the old classic A Christmas Carol. At least it wont be as heavy going as it has been made into enough movies! Another one would be Oliver Twist ... for the same reasons. At least when the reading gets heavy going you can sing along in your head to the songs that were in the musical.
The Picwick Papers would be a good choice...it depends what sort of book you are into though really. Some people can find the type of language used terribly boring. The Mystery of Edwin Drood is about the period of Great Expectations...and I personally favour Nicholas Nickleby (also has many televisional and film adaptations). Hope this helps.
I would suggest 'Hard Times'for being relatively short, yet still being relevant today in its depiction of sweatshop labour and education ideology.
