NZ WORK VISA

Has anyone out there RENEWED a NZ Work Visa after the first 6-month term expired or, alternatively, obtained a 2nd or later Work Visa - in sequence.? How long did it take? Was it necessary to leave NZ while the application was being processed and, if so, would a short tourist stay in Oz have been sufficient while waiting to return to NZ?. Thank you
