trt, I agree it should be available, however this is not the holy grail and indeed would probably not have been a great deal of use in recent riots.

The main cause was our inept bankers who needed thousands £billions of our money to stop their failed businesses going out of business. They were able to do this by blackmailing the Government by the threat of the collapse of the banking system. This was a scam pulled all over the world. From the US to the PIGS, Governments were virtually bankrupted by the bailouts. The Labour Government were in charge at the time so they cannot avoid some responsibility. But everyone else fell for the same scam.
Fast forward 4 years, services have been cut, joblessness is rising, and the banks are back paying themselves multi £million bonuses.
Bring on the revolution.

Two of the three, water cannon and tear gas, won't work. The last rioters were actually mobs moving from place to place looking for places to loot. They'd move away from the gas and being a bit wet wouldn't stop them robbing.
A taser is designed to be a substitute for lethal force. Hardly an appropriate response to a riot. It's not Northern Ireland 30 years ago we're talking about here.

They may get permission for water-cannons, tea gas and tasers, but will they get permission to use them?
By the time the senior officers have come together and granted permission for their use, and by the time the appropriate paper work has been drawn up, then it may well be all over.
Even if they are used, then there will be a lengthy inquiry why they were used, and maybe some individual police officers will most likely face disciplinary action of one kind or other for using them.
No I can never see them being used in this country.

This was the comment I was referring to, which was one post under one of yours, and under a different thread.
/// The Russians knew what to do with a (so-called) royal family.///
/// I look forward to the day that we do the same. ///
Simple mistake to make, but I will offer no apology however since you rudely called me 'stupid and dishonest'.
Interesting to note however that although the post underneath your abusive one was removed by the ED for some reason, he let yours remain.
But your original comment:
/// Let's just have the Queen shot before the summer and save a few pennies. ///
and your request to /// Bring on the revolution. ///
Still puts you in the picture for an early morning wake-up.

A Dutch fellow I met recently was amazed at the way the Police were so restrained. He said that the Police in Holland would have used firearms to shoot the perpetrators of arson where their clear intent was to endanger life by their actions. Good to see that the subsequent enquiry here also endorsed the use of firearms in such circumstances. But, oh dear, the hand-wringing IPCC would then adjudicate for ever thereafter and eventually find reasons to criticise the use of lethal force to prevent murders.
Tasers I've never approved of, but I can see water cannon and tear gas being inevitable in the long run, should this sort of thing break out again.
It's a dangerous step though. When we see news film of foreign rulers controlling citizens protesting it's not uncommon for this sort of weapon to be in use. Once a weapon is available there is always the danger of misuse by authorities.
But more police on the streets and better strategies would probably go a long way towards nippng this sort of incident in the bud anyway.

bad news for you Old_Geezer...
// Police numbers in London are set to fall by more than 1,000 this year as Britain's biggest force battles to meet budget cuts of £100 million.
The Met is losing 100 officers a month but not one is being replaced, dramatically increasing the pressure on front-line policing. //

Needless to say, at the Election they promised that frontline policing would not be cut.
