What is the maximun number of peple allowed in a dwelling before the insurance is invalidated?

Surely it depends on the size of the dwelling.

For example the "rules" will be different for a small terraced house and Buckingham Palace

So lets say three bed terrace
6 people per bedroom(18 for the house), long term, is it not considered anymore of a risk the 1.3 per bedroom (4 people for the house) ?

Is there some inherent limit?

There is usually a question about 'occupancy' when taking out a policy....

Depends. If you are renting out rooms, the insurer will want to know how the rentals work. And you must tell the truth.
If you just have a huge family, that's different. The insurers can't tell you you can't insure a house because you have fifteen children. But they might refuse to do accident insurance for house contents.

Because they do ask how many people there would be in the property

I don't think there is a maximum.
When my father passed away the insurer wanted about £20 extra as they said a single person in a 4 bedroom detached house tends to go out more between 6pm and midnight.
