Under sink plug sockets?
Can you install plug sockets under kitchen sinks? I didnt think you could because of the risk of water leaking on to it but I have seen several houses recently with plug sockets fitted to the inside of the kitchen sink base unit. Surely this cant be safe?

Cleversod, nothing at all wrong with putting a socket under the sink, the regs say that it should be fixed to the fabric og the building though, i.e. a wall but I disagree as the ease of maintenance is easier if its in side the unit. You can fit a socket inside the sink providing you use the correct equipment. Sockets that could potentially be used for a portable appliance outside should be protected by and RCD. Next January you will be allowed to put a 13amp socket outlet in the bathroom providing it is in the correct zone and RCD protected.

Think safety first, there is a requirement for local isolation and if you want to milk the customer and install a kitchen with loads of unsightly switches above the worktop then so be it. Don't blame the fitters that are not installing them they may be saving the customer some �s.

Cleversod, some people just cannot admit it when there wrong, you cannot blame kitchen fitters, lots of new house's have sockets below the sink, as I said before an RCD will interupt the supply if any water does leak down from the above work top. And cheers Sharky your a top man, I'll spoon with you later....
Right Arguments Aside,
B&Q Fitted my Wife's Kitchen,
I will list the problems
B&Q did everything, Kitchen Fitting, Tiling, Electrics and Plumbing,
Basics,
No Isolators on the Taps, No Isolator Tap on the Dishwasher Supply Hose,
Coated Door above Oven Top Vent which has now distorted,
No Heatsink above Spotlight, no dust covers fitted, wrong rating Spots fitted, Under Cupboard Switch fitted with only 2 of the 4 screws supplied,
Extractor Trunking not attached to Units (rigid trunk).
Plug Socket under Sink, next to Dishwasher right at front of unit where water spillage tracks down inside the door.
Kick Boards not fitted correctly.
Stop Cock placed behind Carousel, after being moved. Hole not filled to outside of the house resulting in Mice under the kick boards,
had to cut back out of the carousel cupboard ourselves to access the stop cock, fitter honestly expected my wife to reach under the kick board through mouse droppings (if we hadn't found them first) to turn off a full stop cock tap.
And now the best bit. Kichen tiled with Fused Isolator fitted for Immersion Heater. Universal Timer Backplate fed off same Spur, fitted too close, instead of making larger hole for mounting box, drilled the back plate to elongate holes, still too close, fitted back plate with one screw OVER, not IN the mounting box and used a mix of Sealant and Grout to Glue the Backplate to the Wall with the Timer Attached, then Grouted around it and filled with sealant to hide the bodge. The single screw which should attach the timer to the backplate wasn't even fitted for effect.
I found this out when I wanted to change the timer for a newer one, no screw, timer wouldn't tilt to disconnect, when i forced it, 3 tiles came with it revealing the the bodge job beneath. Did I mention, Earth cable was the shortest of 3 cable and they all were stretched from the isolater (3 inches away) to reach the socket. How much does a bit of wire cost?
Light Switch fitted upside down - we still have it like this as a source of amusement.
Gas Pipes boxed in, then mysteriously a hole has been drilled in them.
Adjacent Cupboards fitted with hinges aligned, using long screws which funnily enough hit eachother, so they were just left rather than re-siting the hinge.
A 13 amp twin socket in dining room with 1950 wiring was tapped to make a spur in the Extension (Garage) and 2 Double Sockets were fitted marked 13 amps. The wiring was not unbroken, it was extended inexplicably in 2 sections using 2 circular Communications Junction Boxes. These aren't even electrical terminations and have no rating. We have been running a Freezer 2 washing machines and a Tumble dryer from these, believing it to be fed from the RCD on the Separate consumer unit in the Garage.
We knew something was wrong when the freezer turned off after 10 years, no RCD trips, no fuses blown, only 1.5v at socket. Traced the cable to find a Fire had occured in the old Exterior Wall and degraded the cable.
This is B&Q's four Star Fitters, who can't even fit a laminate floor all the way to the Wall and use bits of Skirting board on single unbroken walls.
Don't put floating floor Draft seals on external boundaries.
And fitted a blind retainer into a window which doesn't have a lintel..
Need I go on?
This kitchen was not fitted for Free, it was done over Christmas and Cost a fortune. My Wife's Ex BF obviously thought the work was OK.
They even had the Bathroom done, and wait for this,
a tap was fitted but the clearance wasn't right and the plastic retainer broke, solution use a the cover off a tap turned upside down and a cross threaded brass bath tap retainer so you can lock it off in 5 turns instead of travelling the full length of the thread..
Oh and our electrician had a field day with B&Q about fitting Earths to Baths and Sinks - as none of the 4 sinks in our house had one and neither did the bath. All B&Q handywork.
There are no regs about sockets under sinks, but there is a code of practice.
