Poastage within U.K. / N. Ireland.

How come on E bay, Sellers from N. Ireland do not charge extra postage to U.K. mainland but Sellers from U.K. mainland to N. Ireland do. Some charge double. Can anyone explain this to me?

It obviously does cost the Royal Mail more to take something to Northern Ireland than to the next village, but they absorb this cost as a public service (until the Post Office is privatised). Private courier companies are unlikely to absorb this cost.
