Is there any way of blocking these calls that seem to originate from the Indian sub-continent?

Contact your phone service supplier. They can block international calls and I suspect they may be able to filter particular sources. Wouldn't hurt to enquire. Probably cost you though.

I am with Talk-Talk OG and guess where they are based. I could believe that they had sold my ex-directory number, if I had a bad mind
Try this service.....

I've been getting loads of calls by people trying to trace any PPI I've had, and saying I have taken out credit in the last few years. (Not true).
Once I start asking how they have traced me as the last time I took out any PPI was years ago and I have since moved house with an ex-directory number, they start to get confused. End of conversation.
With TalkTalk you can get caller display on your phone for free. Calls from overseas come up 'International' on your phone.

If you are not expecting an overseas call, just don't answer.
Any other calls you don't recognise the number of, just let it go to answermachine. Simples.
I'm with BT, but I use Hopkirk's strategy too.

Another tip, which came from an ABer, is to hold the phone up to the smoke detector and press 'Test'
