Serial to USB transfer stops midway thru!

I had an XP desktop. I use GPS a lot and because the desktop didn't have a serial port (which is all my GPS software will accept!) I also bought a Logitech serial to USB converter cable, which I installed on my XP desktop and it worked just fine, up/downloading tracks, waypoints etc. from GPS to mapping sofftware.

Then I upgraded to a Windows 7 laptop.

On my Win7 laptop, I plugged in the cable and Windows installed what it thought were the correct drivers. Everything worked first time - woo hoo! Too good to be true, I thought!

It worked fine for a couple of weeks.

Now, when I try downloading a track it seems to be working up to a certain point, where it just stops for no apparent reason. No error message, it just stops with x number of trackpoints having been downloaded.

I checked all the connections were firm, but to no avail. I deleted some old tracks in case the library was full, again to no avail. The number of track points that are downloaded seems completely random, ranging from a couple of dozen points to a few hundred. I tried many, many times and the same thing kept happening!

So, I tried to download the trackpoints to my old WinXP desktop - and it worked first time! Same GPS, same cable, same software! All 1734 track points downloaded!

Has anyone had this problem? I can get round it by downloading to the XP machine and then transferring the track file to the laptop on a key-drive, but I was hoping to get rid of the desktop and it's also a pain to have to keep doing this!

If it worked fine for a couple of weeks, maybe there has been a driver update since you first installed it? Try finding the device in device manager and rolling back the driver if that's the case. It might not be the answer, but worth a look.
