My son (13) asked me a curios question yesterday.

He asked why after playing rugby, and he was still a bit sweaty and dirty, did girls seem to talk to him more than when he was clean and dressed up???

Is there something in this?

The scientific answer might be that they can pick up on his pheromones, chemicals which tell the opposite sex that he is fertile. When he is clean he will have washed some of these off and therefore the girls won't pick up on this.

However I think it might be more likely that they are just more interested in somebody who isn't 1 dimensional i.e. he is interesting, if he's all dressed up it might be difficult for girls to talk to him because they know nothing about him, when he's just played rugby they at least have something to talk to him about (even as a hook to move on to other things).

I'd totally agree with WoWo on the latter point.

Maybe its also going back to cave times; women prefer men that play sports and exercise etc. because when we were cavemen, only the ones that hunted and worked got food and lived. Perhaps they associate good genes with these people, want their children to have those good genes, thus get friendly with the active cavemen. Perhaps it still exists today?

I go with the smelly answer. Girls flock round me and want sex a lot. I ain't that good looking. Quite good looking. But they want action, lots of them. It must be the smell. Some kind of cue. Not my looks alone.

Sorry El D, it's definitely pheromones! I used to be in (secondary) teaching. Occasionally it would be necessary to return equipment to the gym which meant going through the (unoccupied) changing rooms. Being male, I automatically chose a route through the boys' changing rooms. There was never a shortage of teenage girls volunteering to assist and they always slowed as they passed through the (recently vacated) boys' changing rooms, visibly 'soaking up' the sweaty atmosphere!
