Car Tax Refund

I am part exchanging my car on Saturday and want to know if I can claim back the tax from Sunday 1st April? If so how do I do that or do I have to lose the month's refund ?

I havn't done it Smurf but I think that if you get a date of transfer on the log book before the end of March then you can get April refunded. If you go so much as 1 day over though you lose the month.
Then you fill in the form from the Post Office and send your old tax disc back.
The garage may be prepared to buy it off you though to save the hassle of retaxing it

The old disc must be posted (along with form V14) before the first of the month. You can also apply for a refund online, but I'm not sure how that works when you get close to the beginning of the month as in your case.

Is the buyer aware you will be giving them an untaxed car?

You don't usually part exchange with a private buyer.

Have you agreed with the garage that you will be removing the tax disc ?

They tend to get very stroppy if you do it without having warned them, because they will have factored the unexpired value of the tax into the part exchange calculation ...

I always remove the unexpired tax disc unless it has specifically been included in the deal. Never had any comments afterwards.

Selling to a dealer and have paid for a new tax disc for new car, through them.

...yes, but make sure you get a "proof of posting".

You attach the tax disc to the form

It all depends on your mail collection times, I'd feel inclined to take it to a post office as soon as you can tomorrow in the morning and send it special/recorded delivery, that way you'll have a dated receipt in the event of an argument.Dont forget Sunday is a no-go day as far as the PO is conerned usually, altho' the one in our local co-op does open Sundays 8x4.

You fill in the refund form and that has to go with the old disc. And you ask for "proof of posting" which you keep in a safe place!

As an aside, we take part-exchanges every day and I positively encourage the customers to take their old tax disc. We don't cash them in.

by the time the DVLA deduct the charges/fees you don't get it all back!
