How do you decide which answer to enter?

Are you sure you have to enter the APRIL FOOL letters or omit them?
Azed says after the puzzle that 25 down is not in Chambers (2011). REDEAL is.
This suggests to me that the L in 38 across is to be omitted, and thus for the others.
