Fit as a butcher's dog

Why would a butcher's dog be any fitter than any other tradesman's dog?

Would a carpenter's dog fed on sawdust be as healthy as the butcher's dog fed on prime porky worky?

I believe the saying relates to the diet.

I thought it was an advertising slogan for "Butchers Complete" - a brand of dried dog food.

i dont know if this is true or not, but i got told in the 50's butchers used to do deliveries on bicycles to relavent customers in the villages, dunno if it was the butchers dog or neighbours dogs used to follow the butcher for the meat..

not sure if its true though!!!! ( uncles are butchers )
