I've read a lot of information over the last few weeks about the health benefits of green tea but some of the websites also mention it may help with weight loss too, obviously as part of your general healthy diet and exercise as it is supposed to help burn fat, I just wondered if it was all bunkum as many of these claims turn out to be.

Bunkum I'm afraid - there isn't a single scientific study which supports the idea of green tea being an aid to weight loss. I drink it because I like it, don't want to have too much caffeine, and because people have been drinking it for generations. If you want to lose weight, try a low-carb/high fat diet. It's the best way to lose weight and keep it off. For the science etc you can visit http://www.dietdoctor.com/lchf No "hard sell" for books etc, just helpful information. I lost weight this way (and keep it off) and can thoroughly recommend. Hope this helps!
Thanks for the answers everyone.
I'd like to say, I didn't think that green tea on it's own would cause weight loss, it is supposed to help burn fat better when exercising. It is also said to make you feel fuller quicker when eating so you eat less.
As it has other health benefits that are documented I have decided to start taking green tea capsules anyway (can't stand the drinkable version) and see how I go.
:)

Not sure if it helps with weight loss, but if you google benefits of drinking green tea it does seem to have a lot of health benifits. taken form one web site
"The secret of green tea lies in the fact it is rich in catechin polyphenols, particularly epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). EGCG is a powerful anti-oxidant: besides inhibiting the growth of cancer cells, it kills cancer cells without harming healthy tissue."
If this is true then we should all be drinking green tea!
Also
"It has also been effective in lowering LDL cholesterol levels, and inhibiting the abnormal formation of blood clots. The latter takes on added importance when you consider that thrombosis (the formation of abnormal blood clots) is the leading cause of heart attacks and stroke"
I have been drinking it for years (cant stand normal tea now)
