key fob on 1999 ford focus will not work

i have a 1999 ford focus. my key fob buttons do not work at all to lock the car, if i use the key in the door the central locking works fine. i have tried lots of different reprogramming but nothing has been successful. it gets as far as making the chime noise and thats that
any help? ford want £50 just to look!!

I assume that you have changed the battery in the key fob?

On the point of the battery, clean the contact point within the fob.
