Tax and MOT ran out

I have totally forgot to renew my tax and when I went to do so I realised my MOT had run out. Is there any grace period as I cannot get my car MOT done till tomorrow?

You can only drive your car legally now if you are on the way to or back from a pre-booked MOT

Garmard....I do think it used to unofficially be 14 days grace for car tax, but that was if you had a valid MOT certificate which is not the case here

I'm sure it has been sat on shiznit's drive all this time. But you are supposed to tell the DVLC when it is off road. Did you not get a reminder ?

Joe beat me to it, yes you can drive an untaxed car to an MOT station, make sure you have the details of the prebooked slot with you in case you are stopped.

If you get stopped with no tax, the Police seem quite lenient.

But having no MOT will get you a fine.

Thanks everyone, the car is on the drive till I take it the garage tomorrow. It was a genuine mistake, I did get a reminder, and could have done it on line but for some reason this year I forgot to do it. I have been trying to get it sorted as quickly as possible but tomorrow is the earliest my garage can do it.

there is no grace period and never has been. However the authorities will not "notice" for a couple of weeks but when you tax it you'll be paying from the 1st of the month anyway so you'll be ok if you do it asap.

Even if you decide to keep the car off the road, you need to inform the DVLA and fill out a form. And if you are driving to an MOT station, and are stopped on the way, the police must be able to confirm that your car is booked and that you are only going to the MOT station. And I am sure the insurance people also need to be advised of your situation. They sometimes get very difficult when there is an accident and the MOT is not current.

Just food for thought. My company accountant also thought there was a grace period, but he didn't check, and he let all our company cars tax run out trying to improve cashflow. We got lumbered with a fine, fairly large I suspect as no one would talk about it.

Plus there is 5 days "grace" if you have actually applied for a new disc online or by phone, otherwise your screwed if caught.

but if you do it online it does have to be done so many days prior to it expiring ie 5 days before it expires.this is to prevent people applying online the very last day and saying 'oh i did it online but have not received it'

Then they say it can take 5 days and they dont do you for not having a valid tax disc but they can do you for not displaying one if they want to

How can you 'forget' shiznit? We all make mistakes of course, but surely 'forgetting' is no reason here. You've had a whole month to take the car for an MoT before it ran out. At any time in that month they would have forward dated the new MoT to one year from the expiry of the old one. You could have had an MoT valid for a maximum of 13 months.

I have totally forgot to book my MOT too...its six weeks over due...i have only noticed because we are off on holiday tomorrow and went to get car details...its a second hand car that came with car tax until the end of june and i thought the mot was due the same time...genuine mistake.....is there cameras on the motorway?
