Today at my local rubbish tip I was getting rid of some tree cuttings and an old boy pulled up next to me, he opened the back of his car and asked one of the staff what bin he should put his mattress in.

He pointed to the bin marked household rubbish then walked off, the old boy then started to drag the mattress out of his car and then struggling to drag it from his car to the steps of the bin another two staff walked past him so I offered to help him, I told him to let go of the mattress and then took it up the stairs and chucked it into the bin.

I then went back and threw the rest of his stuff away for him.

The old chap then tried to give me a five pound note for helping him but I told him to keep it and get himself a drink.

He grabbed my hand and thanked me and the look in his eyes was so sincere it made me want to chuck one of those lazy hi viz wearing skip monkeys into one of the bins!!!!!!

Elvis, i wasn't saying you shouldn't help him, in fact good on you for doing so.

I was just pointing out that he got it into the car presumably on his own, why not back out again?

If someone helped him get it in, in the first place, why on earth didn't they go with him to help him get it out again?

And again, my whole point being is that you really shouldn't expect help from anyone in any given situation that you yourself may not be able to do on your own.

Sorry but I was brought up to offer to help before being asked.

It's not the first time it's happened either and I don't buy into all that H&S crap either, they're able enough to jump in a bin to rescue something they want yet they can't help someone lift something incase they hurt themselves....poor little lambs

They are as bad as their dustmen colleagues, if your bin isn't within 12 inches of your boundary they will not empty it, or if the lid is slightly open due to that extra bag you squashed in, again they won't empty it.

Yet every bloody Tuesday you can bet your bottom dollar that the bin will be left halfway across the drive so you have to either get out and move it first like the missus does or skilfully drive into it and steer it up the driveway like I do.

Don't have a go at the bin men. Would you want to walk around in all weathers picking up others people crap whilst being abused by drivers because you dare be in their way. And you can't exactly expect them to go and neatly line your bin back by your house.

Bin men choose the job they do so spare me the all weathers sob story, and I don't expect the bin to be placed back by my house but somewhere near where I leave it would be nice.
Funny how they are all smiles and friendly the weeks up to Xmas then back to their couldnt give a toss attitude in January, could be the cold weather?

Elvis not all bin men choose the job they do. They take the only job they can get sometimes. But thanks for helping the old bloke.

Regardless if they choose it or not, it's no excuse to leave bins strewn across the pavement.

Plus I wouldn't say they do the job because it's all there is, there's a waiting list to get on the dust.

I took 3 matresses to the tip last week as my daughter had just had the kids bedrooms re-fitted. The guy at the tip took them all for me and dumped them in the skip without me doing anything. They're not allowed to receive any money. I was very grateful. He was really good.
