a lawyer
The Bible simply does not say what his profession was. I'd be fascinated to know, Nattajax, where you got your information. Cheers (This question was asked here some weeks ago.)
Yes, like Quizmonster I too would like to know where you get your information from nattajax. I believe this quiz suggests the initial letter of the answer begins with M which could be anything - Medic and Merchant being two answers suggested - but I have the awful feeling the compilers have made up an answer or have taken it for granted that the answer they have found elsewhere is correct - without checking to see if this is confirmed in the Bible.

Luke 10:25-42 www.blueletterbible.org

And, behold, a certain lawyer stood up, and tempted him, saying, Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?

Luk 10:26 He said unto him, What is written in the law? how readest thou?

Luk 10:27 And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself.

Luk 10:28 And he said unto him, Thou hast answered right: this do, and thou shalt live.

Luk 10:29 But he, willing to justify himself, said unto Jesus, And who is my neighbour?

Luk 10:30 And Jesus answering said, A certain [man] went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his raiment, and wounded [him], and departed, leaving [him] half dead.

Luk 10:31 And by chance there came down a certain priest that way: and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side.

Luk 10:32 And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place, came and looked [on him], and passed by on the other side.

Luk 10:33 But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion [on him],

Luk 10:34 And went to [him], and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him.

The Law referred to here is the "Israelite Code of Conduct" for want of a better phrase, which every Israelite was expected to know and which was given to Moses,I believe and does not refer to a profression

Sorry nattajax but you have completely misunderstood this part of the Bible. The 'lawyer' asked Jesus 'Who is my neighbour?'. Jesus replied with the parable of the good samaritan, showing the 'lawyer' that everybody is to be taken as one's neighbour and not just those people who live close by.

The 'lawyer' is not to be taken as the profession of the good samaritan in these verses.

I will stand corrected. sorry to cause a stir

As I said to the person who posted this question earlier, Nattajax, I hope he/she or Hyltonh comes back to us when the answers are finally revealed and lets us know what the quiz-compilers came up with.
I'd be even more impressed if they could get them to justify their claim. They may think he was a merchant or a money-lender or a host of other m-possibilities - or should I say im-possibilities? - but I think they're on a wrong 'un here!

I did find a reference that said he was presumed to be a merchant or something like that

Here is the King James' Bible version of Luke Ch 10 v 35, following on from Nattajax' copy and paste of the actual Bible story above...
" And on the morrow when he departed, he took out two pence, and gave them to the host, and said unto him, Take care of him; and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again, I will repay thee. "
That's it. Verses 33/4/5 and the Samaritan has come and gone...end of story...his profession is utterly irrelevant and thus nowhere mentioned. I cannot imagine, therefore, why anyone would 'presume' him to be anything in particular. It's nonsense.
