cat may have just been startled by it. Our cat has been out in the garden the
same time as a fox and they completely ignored one another. The fox rummaged about for his grub and our cat just sat and watched! I hope your
cat is none the worse for his scare. Our pets are precious.

there was certainly a fierce fight going on starbuckzone....we live by open fields and we have often seen foxes in our garden but have never had any problems with them in fact they are lovely...i bet they were chasing the same mouse or something...charlie is now drinking some milk [along with the dog lol]...and appears none the worse for her scrap...
There are probably isolated incidents, one creature can have a disagreement with another: but I think the usual case is that neither want to get in a fight for the sake of it, they might get injured. It not like one is prey for the other, and being different species there should be no territorial issues. Perhaps they bumped into each other in the dark.
From what you say, it does sound like a catr fight.
We have an urban fox who lives on the canal bank behind our house, and he appears around seven every night because some people on the state feed him. He sits and waits at the bottom of their drive and after his tea, he has a wander around. There are loads of cats on the estate, but i have never heard any noise when the fox is around, which would be likely if he was trouble for them.
Cats are territorial, so an occasional scrap among neighbours is very common, I would immagine this is what you heard. They are usually more about noise and fury than injury, and eventually the pecking order is settled, so don't owrry too much about it.

if they are desperate for food they will attack a cat. Man next door saw fox on top of his shed with a cat in its mouth, fox wanted to jump down so he dropped the cat down first and the poor cat was too traumatised to run so then the fox jumped own and picked the cat up again, by the time next door got into his garden to stop it they both had vanished. We always keep our cat indoors at night because of this problem.
