which portable fire
9 Answers
Hi all,
Live in an old house that even during the summer can feel chilly, obviously want to turn of the CH during the summer but in the evenings the rooms get a littly chilly, rather than burning the CH all night I thought it may be cheaper to buy an oil filled radiator or an electric fire.
Can anyone help - don't want to spend a fortune on it either - its is for a room about 9ft wide by 12 foot long - it really is just to take the chill off.

As said above the glow although making it seem warmer is hard on the eyes if looking at directly. The heat is instantaneous but does not match up to a fan assisted fire. I would not use a calor gas heater as being such a small room would be intoxicating with the lethal discharges you sometimes get not to mention the smell.
why don't you fit an electric element into the radiator you already have, so in the summer when the heating is off you can just flick a switch and heat the rad electrically....obviously this method will depend on the availability of a electric source near the rad but there would be no need for any other heaters etc.....it just needs a power source and a "t" adaptor on the rad valve.
I have this morning just used a halogen heater for the first time (the heating system at work is being repaired). It was efficient enough, but fortunately I had my back to it - the glow is really bright and even it's owner admitted that when she uses it in her conservatory at home she turns it to face the wall!
Have also used an oil-filled radiator at times - very efficient and usually has a thermostat.
