When entering competitions online, you are frequently asked to type in two words before your entry is accepted ( I am thinking specifically ITV competitions but others also use this system).
What I would like to know is why they sometimes make one of the words very difficult to make out, and if you type it wrong, your entry is not accepted. I cannot see any need for this word to be difficult to make out, but perhaps someone knows the reason why?

The reason is so that OCR software can't recognise it. Most sites have an option button to give another if you can't make it out.
