With regard to sport, if any competitor or team from Scotland, Wales, etc. is performing well in any international competition, they are always referred to as British.
If they are being trounced, then they are described as being Scottish, Welsh, or whatever, in an effort to deny that their English counterparts could perform so badly.
If you were born in the country of England you may be English, although if your parents were not English then you are not the real thing. My daughter was born in England and my wife in Philippines, so our daughter is half-English. They are both now registered as British; a meaningless title for the past decade since millions born absolutely anywhere now claim to be British, with millions more on the way.
no newsdesk , its nothing to do with chips on shoulders , it down to facts if you took time to delve into things more you would be able to explain the difference between english and british , how do the english know when they are english or british ?

Legerwhatever, Are you the guy that purports to reside in Tenerife? If so, what the hell are you doing on here at this time of night, you should be out enjoying yourself, not cyberomancing!
scotland, england, wales and northern ireland are not individual sovereign states and as such are not recognised by the un, european union etc etc but are recognised together as great britain being the soveriegn state. but individually they are commonwealth countries and as such is why they compete on an individual basis at the commonwealth games. regrdless of whether people like it or not if they are born in any of the above mentioned countries they are classed as a british citizen. i dont know how it works regarding the individual football teams/rugby teams though. we should really have a gb team (football) in london olympics after all the rugby boys can have the british lions and still keep their individual nations.
Wrong Corbyloon. Scottish and Welsh are nationalities. You see Scotland and Wales are nations but not countries in their own right. Hence they are nationalities.
What nationality am I? Welsh
What country am I from? Great Britain (the name of the island we all live on - except for our NI friends) or The United Kingdom.
Easy init?
According to The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, there five nations on the island Britain. English, Welsh (or British), Scottish, Pictish, and Latin. The first inhabitants were the Britons, who came from Armenia.
