I enjoy writing lyrics and would like to submit my material for review and for possible take up by an act. What can I do with them?

Ever since the fairytale partnership of Elton John and Bernie Taupin, writers have dreamed of hearing their words sung by a famous vocalist - hence the extremely crowded market you will be entering if you pursue your dream. You could start by mailing your lyrics to the record companies of your favourite artists, or by answering small ads in the NME for composers looking to hook up with lyricists - a complete song will put you ahead of the game. A word of warning -some amateur writers have had their ideas stolen, and been powerless to regain control, and revenue, for their work. It's down to copyright, so get yours sorted - it's very simple. Post a copy of your lyrics to yourself by registered post, and keep the envelope, unopened, with proof of posting. That is your legal proof that your lyrics are yours, as is any money made from them. In addition to Andy's usual sage advice, may I also suggest that if you are going to hook up with anyone, you get a proper agreement between you as to who gets what share of the royalties. It saves a nasty fight later on.
